Below are some views of the village plus a few other places along the coast. Those to the right show a few of the activities on the beach and harbour at Alvor.
Although this ancient coastal village is now a popular holiday location, the enclosed narrow streets have kept development to a minimum. Some of these ancient streets now boast bars with live music along with many different types of restaurants, however, as we wander through the alleys we soon come across the older fishing village of yesteryear.
The village is beautifully located, facing a natural lagoon opening onto the sea. There is a choice of a long open sandy beach or any number of small coves, tucked under the cliffs.
The 16th Century Parish Church is a fine example of the great craftsmanship of the Manueline era of architecture, and is the only building that survived the earthquake of 1755.
The massive Alvor beach in front of the village is one of the nicest beaches in the Algarve. It fringes the eastern half of Lagos Bay with sand dunes leading to the famous Algarve Cliffs and is popular with windsurfers. Acres of wide open sand, offer plenty of space for Beach volley-ball, football, frisby or just those long walks.
Sun-umbrellas and sun-loungers can be rented on a daily basis and there are car parks close to the beach. Several beach restaurants offer traditional grilled fish, lamb, chicken piri-piri and many other local delicacies. Other facilities such as tennis-courts, a football pitch and a bowling green are in the close vicinity.
